The Wet Exit
This essential kayaking maneuver involves exiting a kayak following a capsize.
An Instructor or Instructor Helper will teach your this technique and will stand by your side the entire time, helping you as you learn.
Paddle Strokes
Maneuvering a whitewater kayak is different than a flatwater kayak because of how the boat is designed to be able to navigate a whitewater river. Therefore, it’s important to master the techniques of a variety of paddle strokes. Paddle strokes always lead with your torso and are most effective when rotating your body, not just using your arms. There are many types of paddle strokes but two are important for beginners:
Sweep Stroke
Plant the paddle blade at your toes with the paddle at an angle.
Sweep the blade away from you through the water, rotating your torso, to the stern.
Lift the blade out of the water.
Forward Stroke
Plant the paddle blade at your toes with the paddle vertical.
Pull the paddle through the water next to your kayak to your hip.
Lift the blade out of the water.
